Prep the Apples for Caramelization
- First, core and chop your two apples. In a small saucepan, melt 1 teaspoon of coconut oil over medium heat. Add the chopped apples and gently sauté for about 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until slightly softened and lightly caramelized. Transfer the sautéed apples to your blender.
Warm the Liquids
- In the same small saucepan, combine 3/4 cup of nut milk and 1/2 cup of water. Gently warm over medium-low heat until steaming, but not boiling. You'll see fragrant steam rising.
Combine in Blender
- To the blender with your sautéed apples, add 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon, 1/2 teaspoon of ground nutmeg, 1 tablespoon of maple syrup, 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract, a pinch of salt, and 1/4 teaspoon of lemon zest. If using, add your optional protein powder. Carefully pour in the warm nut milk and water. For a thicker smoothie, start with slightly less liquid and add more as needed.
Blend to Perfection
- Secure the lid on your blender and blend on high for about 1 minute, or until completely smooth and creamy.
Serve & Garnish
- Pour your delicious warm smoothie into a glass. Garnish with additional thinly sliced apples and a sprinkle of ground cinnamon for a beautiful finish. Enjoy immediately!
Notes
Sautéing apples in coconut oil is crucial for caramelized flavor. A pinch of salt and lemon zest brightens the spices. Warm liquids until steaming for a cozy temperature. Use fresh spices and a high-speed blender for optimal texture. Adjust sweetness and thickness as desired. For a thicker smoothie, consider adding oats or nut butter.
