Method
Brown the Ground Beef
- Heat a saute pan on medium-high heat. Add the ground beef to the pan and cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until it is fully browned (about 6-8 minutes). Ensure no pink remains.
Prep the Vegetables
- While the ground beef is browning, dice the white onion and green pepper. Remove the core and seeds from the green pepper.
Drain the Beef
- Once the ground beef is fully browned, remove the pan from the heat. Carefully drain any excess grease using a medium to large bowl with a mesh strainer.
Sauté Vegetables with Beef
- Wipe the saute pan clean and return it to medium-high heat. Add the drained ground beef back to the pan. Now, add the diced green peppers and onions, Worcestershire sauce, salt, black pepper, ground mustard, and 1 clove of minced garlic.
Cook Until Softened
- Continue to cook the mixture, stirring occasionally, until the peppers and onions have softened (about 4-5 minutes). The onions should become translucent and peppers tender. Turn off the heat.
Preheat Oven
- Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit (190 degrees Celsius).
Prepare Baking Dish
- Lightly spray a baking dish with olive oil spray. Arrange the mini sub buns in the pan, standing them cut side up.
Stuff the Buns
- Carefully and evenly stuff each bun with the ground beef mixture.
Add Cheese
- Generously sprinkle the shredded cheese over the top of the ground beef mixture in each bun.
Make Garlic Butter
- In a microwave-proof mug or glass measuring cup, melt the butter in the microwave for about 30 seconds.
Add Garlic
- To the melted butter, add the remaining 2 cloves of minced garlic. Stir well to combine.
Pour Garlic Butter
- Slowly and carefully pour the melted garlic butter on top of each ground beef cheesesteak in the baking dish.
Bake
- Place the baking dish into the preheated oven and bake for 8 minutes, or until buns are golden brown and cheese is melted, bubbly, and slightly browned.
Notes
Store leftover cheesesteaks in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days; reheat in the oven or toaster oven for best results. The ground beef mixture can be prepared up to 2 days ahead, cooled, and stored in the fridge. Reheat before assembling and baking. Experiment with different cheese combinations for your perfect cheesesteak. Lightly toast buns before filling to prevent sogginess. Use 80/20 ground beef and fresh garlic for optimal flavor.
