Ingredients

  • 14 oz extra-firm tofu, pressed
  • 3 tbsp cornstarch
  • 2 tbsp sesame oil
  • 0.25 cup soy sauce (or tamari for gluten-free)
  • 1.5 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 1.5 tbsp maple syrup or agave
  • 2 tbsp Sriracha (adjust to taste)
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • Toasted sesame seeds (garnish)
  • Sliced green onions (garnish)
  • Cooked rice or noodles, for serving

Equipment

  • Tofu press or heavy object For pressing tofu
  • Large non-stick skillet For pan-frying tofu
  • Two mixing bowls One for coating, one for sauce
  • Whisk For blending sauce
  • Spatula To flip tofu cubes

Method

  1. Remove tofu from packaging, drain, and press for at least 30 minutes using a tofu press or heavy object. Pat dry.
  2. Cut pressed tofu into ½ to ¾-inch cubes. Toss gently with cornstarch in a bowl until evenly coated.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together soy sauce, rice vinegar, maple syrup, Sriracha, and garlic powder. Set aside.
  4. Heat sesame oil in a large non-stick skillet over medium-high heat. Add tofu cubes in a single layer without crowding. Fry for 3–5 minutes per side until golden brown and crispy.
  5. Remove skillet from heat and pour sauce over the tofu. Toss gently to coat. The residual heat will thicken the sauce.
  6. Serve tofu over rice or noodles. Garnish with sesame seeds and green onions. Enjoy hot.

Notes

Always press your tofu well and coat evenly with cornstarch. Add sauce at the end for best crispiness. Adjust spice level by modifying the Sriracha in the sauce. This dish reheats well in an air fryer or skillet.
